If you’re in Northampton and you want to take your laptop somewhere to work, your options are pretty limited. It’s Thursday morning and today I’ve chosen the Waitrose near my parents’ house. (I’m in the cafe, obviously - the options aren’t so limited I’m just parked up by the pasta.)
I used to go to the Starbucks over the road but there’s been a sign stuck on the door for weeks now saying that they’re closed due to “unforeseen circumstances and weather conditions”?! Absolutely bizarre. The background music was too loud in there anyway though, so Waitrose is better. It’s pretty quiet in the mornings, just pensioners chatting and a couple of other people typing. The best thing is when you get here early enough to secure a little booth by the window. Plug points, wifi and impersonal enough that you don’t feel too bad stringing out one coffee for two hours.
Considering how desperate I was to have a remote, do-it-from-anywhere sort of job when I worked in an office, it turns out I actually hate working from home. Any home, any house, not even just mine (clearly, given that I don’t actually have one at the moment). If I get up and get dressed in the morning, if I pack a bag and go outside, if I walk to a place where I’m surrounded by other humans (even if I don’t want to actually interact with them) then I’m much more likely to just get on with whatever I need to do and not end up in a big spiral of procrastination.
